U.S. to Host AI Safety Summit in San Francisco, Aiming for Global Collaboration

The United States is set to host an AI Safety Summit in San Francisco, aiming to foster collaboration and align tech goals among top nations. The summit, scheduled to take place between November 20-21, will be led by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. The event will convene the International Network of AI Safety Institutes, which was established after a previous summit in South Korea.

The network currently includes Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, Kenya, South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The U.S. AI Safety Summit is separate from the safety summits hosted by the U.K. and South Korea, with another summit planned for France next year.

The primary focus of the summit will be on addressing concerns related to the use of generative AI, particularly in creating forgeries such as election-related materials, including ads and pictures. Instances of AI-generated images featuring Taylor Swift and deepfake videos have raised concerns about the potential impact on elections.

Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of international collaboration on AI safety, highlighting its potential to solve global challenges. He stated that the AI Safety Network serves as a cornerstone in this effort, aiming to strengthen safety and security while harnessing the potential of AI technology.

The summit will also invite experts from academia and the tech industry to contribute their insights and developments, ensuring officials remain up to date on the rapidly evolving AI sector.
