Elon Musk Voices Concerns Over OpenAI’s Shift to For-Profit Entity

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has expressed apprehension regarding OpenAI’s reported transition to a for-profit entity. OpenAI, which was co-founded by Musk in 2015 but left by him in 2018, is said to be considering a business model shift that could potentially grant OpenAI CEO Sam Altman a 7% stake in the company.

Several media publications reported on Wednesday about OpenAI’s plans to change its business model, which were subsequently shared on social media platforms. Musk also shared one of these reports, stating, “This is deeply wrong.”

In response to the media reports, a spokesperson for OpenAI clarified that the organization’s non-profit status is fundamental to its mission and will continue to exist.

Musk’s concerns about OpenAI’s transition to a for-profit entity are not new. He has previously questioned the legality and legitimacy of this alleged shift. In August of this year, Musk remarked, “Either turning a non-profit into a for-profit is legal and everyone should be doing it, or it’s illegal and OpenAI is a house of cards.”

Furthermore, Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI’s parent company, accusing them of prioritizing commercial gains over their original mission of benefiting humanity. OpenAI has refuted Musk’s allegations about a “founding agreement,” stating that it is a fabrication created by Musk to claim credit for the success of an enterprise he initially supported but later abandoned.
